Summary

Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay) This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs - Veterans Health Administration - Corp. Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center - Emergency Department - Philadelphia - PA. The nature of the work is emergency care: evaluation - stabilization and treatment of any patient/Veteran who presents with a request to be seen.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) - b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) -OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
  • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
  • rather - they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
  • Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Additional Requirement: Completion of an ACGME accredited residency training program in emergency medicine - internal medicine - family medicine
  • Board "eligible" or Board certified in Emergency Medicine or those physicians with extensive (greater than five years) of community based emergency care
  • The Physician is responsible for managing the full spectrum of medical diseases and the varied presentations of such diseases
  • The physician is agile in the treatment of acute deterioration of airway - cardiac - pulmonary - GI - neurological - metabolic - OB/GYN - vascular - traumatic and behavioral health catastrophes
  • EM physicians must also be agile in recognition of pediatric catastrophes - which include initiating stabilizing measures and emergent transfer to a hospital that can provide dedicated pediatric services

  • Performs the following tasks during the ED visit: - Uses their clinical expertise in determining need of stabilization - treatment - consultation - discharge - transfer or admission of patients who present for emergency care
  • - Serves as the 'flow expert' in ED flow of patients - Collaborates with APPs on ESI 1 - 2 or 3 triaged patients - all admissions - transfers and as requested by the APP
  • May also perform the following as directed by Service Chief: - Supervises and trains medical students - residents and other learners - Involvement in quality management and patient safety - Attends monthly ED staff meetings - Serve a Lead Physician on new initiatives - Attends additional meetings and educational opportunities with Service Chief approval - Acquisition of new emergency skills - procedures - processes - protocols enabling the physician/ED to provide up to date emergency care

  • Supervisory Controls related to the position - including clinical and administrative aspects This physician reports to the Service Chief - Emergency Medicine
  • The physician is responsible for evaluating and making clinical recommendations independently - and is considered an expert in the field
  • Use of consultants is at the discretion of the treating physician

  • Computer Security Requirement Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws - federal regulations - VA statutes and policy - and VHA policy
  • Protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss - alteration - or unauthorized deletion
  • Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files - release of access codes - etc. - as set out in the computer access agreement that the employee signs
  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
